Self Care: 2 reasons you don’t practice and how to overcome

As busy professionals I don’t have to tell you how difficult it can be to practice Self-Care with all the pressures and demands you face. Yet, I am sure you can think of at least one time you did so and how good you felt, and I bet, you probably have had the desire to do so at least once in the last 2 weeks.

If we enjoy it and desire it why don’t we do it more?

There are 2 basic reasons:

1)      Don’t feel deserving – lowered self worth

How can you recognize if this is you?Self-Care

-   You constantly sacrifice your own needs to take care of everyone else. Or you may often feel in crisis mode or recovering from a crisis. You’re never quite on solid ground.

2)      Time management skills are lacking

How can you recognize if this is you?

-   You end up feeling resentful, unbalanced, stressed out, and unequipped to handle your responsibilities. Or you feel like you are caught in a vicious cycle, never enough time for you.

The stress and lack of confidence from not practicing Self-Care influences EVERYTHING from the quality of your relationships to the success in your business. You can’t afford not to!

So how do you resolve whichever reason is yours?

First, evaluate your beliefs about Self-Care: Why don’t you feel you are worth self-care? Is it true, is it useful? Or answer why can’t you communicate your needs? Practicing can make you more productive versus self-destructive. It can increase your physical and emotional well-being and improves your resiliency to stay calm when things don’t go your way.

Second, write down the benefits you experience: Acknowledge its value and influence on your success. Such as, relieves stress so you can think clearly and not react, and increases your courage to focus on the right things. By doing so, you prevent those “costly” consequences from not doing so. Big benefit, it allows quite time to tap into your confidence in your Power Zone, which actually improves your capacity to do more.

Third, identify what gets in your way of practicing:

Self-Worth: You are deserving of self-care! You’ll feel better, rest better and even look better. I am a firm believer you teach people how to treat you. This starts with you and how you respect yourself. No one can take self-care from you, you simply allow it.

Time Management: What prevents you from taking ME time? Do you need to set and commit to self-care appointments? Do you need to set limits, like saying “No” to extra projects, social activities, and invitations you know you don’t have the time or energy for? Perhaps you need to evaluate your prioritizing method. Or have a conversation with those who make unrealistic demands.

“Other people make countless demands on your time and energy. But it’s not just about learning to say “no” to others; it’s about learning NOT to automatically say “yes”.”

The bottom line, if you give up opportunities for self-care you’ll end up being good to no one, it will take longer to refill your reservoir, and you’ll be working from lower energy, which can make you reactive. You deserve to be taken care of! Close your eyes, listen to your higher self, breathe her in and then repeat, I am worthy. Then open your eyes and take out your calendar and schedule ME time this week and stick to it. Even start with 5 minutes of uninterrupted time, or turning off your phone after work for one hour, or get up 15 minutes early and slowly slip your coffee.

Use the benefits you listed in part 2 to motivate you to see it through!
